H&J Martin Wins Theatre Job
The £2.6m refurbishment of the Edinburgh's Kings Theatre took an important step forward this week, with the appointment of the main contractor, H&J Martin Ltd. The long-established south Belfast firm won the main contract, covering the first two phases of a three-phase investment into the building. It was awarded following a formal procurement process during which five contractors were short-listed and invited to submit tenders.
Green Matters
The NI Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill MLA has announced that the new Code of Practice for Using Plant Protection Products is about to come into effect. The Code provides practical advice for users of plant protection products and it updates the relevant advice contained in the previous version of DARD's 'Green Code'. It explains how to use plant protection products safely and so meet the legal conditions which cover their use. A summary A3 wall chart has also been produced to supplement the code. The Code and wall chart are currently available as guidance documents, and the Code will come into statutory effect on 14 September. "This new Code provides comprehensive advice for users of plant protection products in agriculture, horticulture, amenity situations and forestry. It is a practical guide to best practice and details the legal requirements which must be followed," she said.
Gaelic School Stymied
The NI Education Minister, John O'Dowd, has turned down a proposal for the establishment of a statutory nursery unit at Gaelscoil Éanna, Glengormley. "I take my statutory duties in relation to Irish-medium education very seriously. Each development proposal for the establishment of new provision must, however, be carefully considered on the basis of all the information pertinent to the individual case. In this instance there are already sufficient Irish-medium places to meet current demand in the area and it is not my Department's policy to displace good quality pre-school provision already in existence with pre-school provision in an alternative setting. On that basis, I could not endorse this proposal," he said.
Derry Road Upgrade
The contract has been awarded to widen A5I5 in Londonderry . Magherafelt based contractor F.P McCann Ltd bagged the €1.6m contract to widen Madam's Bank road (A515). The widened road will be built substantially within the boundary of the existing road. Where the existing road is in cutting, the bottoms of the existing slopes will be removed and replaced by low retaining walls. This will allow established planting on the side slopes to remain. Where the road is on embankment, this will be widened to accommodate the widened road with established planting removed and replaced with new planting. Transport Minister Danny Kennedy said: "This scheme complements the recently improved Culmore Junction and will further improve travelling conditions for the people of the northwest. The road is a key part of the North Western Key Transport Corridor connecting Belfast to Derry City and on to Donegal," he added.
