A World Cup qualifying win is a must for Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland go into tonight’s World Cup qualifier against Iceland knowing a win is essentially if the team are to build on Saturday’s superb 1-1 draw with Denmark in Copenhagen.
A win for Sammy McIlroy’s team tonight’s would be just the tonic for the manager who has yet to pick a team from a fully fit and available squad due ongoing suspensions and recent injuries.
McIlroy will also want to finish this campaign on a high before turning his attention to the 2004 European Championships in Portugal.
Northern Ireland will face an on-form Iceland side who beat the Czech Republic on Saturday and who are looking to get a win in their bid to qualify for next year’s World Cup in Japan and Korea.
The only change for Northern Ireland tonight should be the recalled George McCartney who replaces suspended Colin Murdock at centre-half.
For 20-year-old McCartney it will mark his international debut after starting only two Premiership games for Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Although he normally plays as a left-back, the Belfast born youngster will partner Newcastle United's Aaron Hughes at the heart of the Northern Ireland defence. (MB)
