Green Joins Sinn Fein

A university law lecturer and former leading Green party member has decided to join Sinn Fein. Dr Peter Doran, who had been a member of the Greens for more than 20 years, said he left six months ago because of "misgivings" over economic policies. The ex Deputy Leader is originally from Londonderry and is a law lecturer at Queen's University, Belfast.

Thompson Dock In Focus

The Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson has officially unveiled a plaque to mark the centenary of the Thompson Graving Dock in Titanic Quarter. The dock - once the largest in the world - was opened by the Belfast Harbour Commissioners in 1911. Designed and built by civil engineers, the Dock is 880 feet in length, its huge size enabled the building and fitting of a new generation of White Star liners including the Olympic, Titanic and Britannic. "It is only fitting that the dock in its centenary year is now a protected historic monument. The important role that the Thompson Graving Dock has played in the history of shipbuilding and in the history of Belfast must not be understated or forgotten," he said.

Farmer Fined

A Co Down farmer, John Stevenson, of Moneycarragh Road, Clough, Seaforde, Downpatrick, was convicted at Downpatrick Magistrates' Court of two charges under the Disease Control (Standstill) Order (NI) 2004 and one charge under the Cattle Identification (Enforcement) Regulations (NI) 1998. He pleaded guilty and was fined £1,200 plus £19 costs being convicted of two charges of failure to comply with restrictions imposed by Article 5 of the Disease Control (Standstill) Order (NI) 2004, in that he moved livestock from a holding in relation to which other livestock had made a relevant movement during the previous six days contrary to Article 52 (1)(a) of the Diseases of Animals (NI) Order 1981.

Social Matters

The NI Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has this week released the findings of a report into the social economy sector. The report sought to determine the sector’s potential to contribute to the economic regeneration of our communities, and to establish the best mechanism to take this work forward. It outlines a range of recommendations to help unlock the potential of the sector in partnership with key stakeholders, as well as informing strategic policy direction and any future action plans within the context of the Executive's draft Economic Strategy. "The Executive values the contribution of the social economy sector and the report's findings will ensure that current policy initiatives are in line with the sector's future needs," commented the DUP Executive Minister.

Underweight Goods

A Crossgar poultry packer was fined a total of £2,050 plus £22 costs at Downpatrick Magistrates' Court this week. In a case brought by the Trading Standards Service of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Gregory Bell who trades as G. B. Poultry Ltd pleaded guilty to 17 charges under the Weights and Measures (Northern Ireland) Order 1981. In March 2010, Dr. Stuart MacMurdo of the Belfast Trading Standards Officer performed a routine check on the weights of goods in a Russells Shop 4 You premises in Lisburn and found underweight items on sale. Following further checks he visited the premises of G. B. Poultry Ltd and found that incorrect equipment was being used to make up packages and that no checks were being made on goods bought in, but labelled by, G. B. Poultry Ltd.

Directors Named

The NI Health Minister, Edwin Poots has announced the appointment of two Non-Executive Directors to the Southern Health and Social Care (HSC) Trust. They are Roger Alexander and Siobhan Rooney. The appointments were made in accordance with the Code of Practice issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland for a four-year term. The Southern HSC Trust is managed directly by a board of directors, which has corporate responsibility for its operation. The board is made up of five executive directors and seven non-executive directors and a non-executive Chair.

£1.5m Investment To Preserve Titanic Dry Dock
