Happy Birthday

Belfast Zoo's resident male Barbary lion, Qays, is turning the grand old age of eight this Saturday and visitors are being asked to bring along their own little cubs to celebrate Qays' birthday, with fun activities for the whole family to enjoy such as face painting; pin the tail on the [not real] lion; a birthday cake and a trail around the zoo to be in with the chance of winning a special prize and of course to watch the lions enjoy their special birthday treats. Qays' birthday celebrations will take place from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday 10th September.

Ardoyne Boosted

A state-of-the art project has been completed for the benefit of local people in the Upper Ardoyne area of Belfast. The NI Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland officially opened the new 'Jolly Roger' business and community facility to include a Mace retail facility; community facilities for activities such as counselling, advice and alternative therapies; conference and training facilities for education and employment training and office units. The DUP Minister said: "This is great news for the people of North Belfast. This project represents the culmination of years of hard work and vision by local people. I salute their efforts and welcome the opportunity for my Department and the International Fund for Ireland to help deliver a better quality of life for the next generation, delivering services, new opportunities and sustainability for the future," he said.

Comber Means Business

Comber retailers and professional business people have attended a meeting organised by the Alliance Party at the town's Leisure Centre to discuss future opportunities for Comber. At the end of the meeting there was consensus that Comber business people should work together to regenerate the town. Deborah Girvan, Alliance Councillor for Ards, who organised the meeting explained: "I decided to introduce myself to the people who work in Comber, not just in trade and retail sector but also those who provide professional services or work in the public sector. It became clear that people who worked in Comber had major issues about the town but also had some great ideas on how to regenerate Comber. I invited as many Comber business people that I could physically visit prior to the meeting along with all of the elected political representatives for Ards West and Strangford. I was delighted that 29 people turned up which included traders, political representatives and other individuals who had a vested interest in the town," she enthused.

Car Share Call

The Stormont Transport Minister Danny Kennedy is calling on motorists across Northern Ireland to sign up to the Car Share NI website and save money. The scheme is aimed at matching people with other commuters undertaking similar car journeys so they can travel together with 'sustainability'. "Car sharing is really gaining in momentum and there are good reasons for it. More and more people are starting to recognise that running a car has mounting costs both for the driver in terms of petrol, maintenance and parking expenses and for the wider community in terms of traffic and pollution," he said. "Drivers and passengers can share the cost of petrol and parking and enjoy the social benefits of having someone to travel with."
