China showcase in Belfast highlights business opportunities

Almost 50 senior Northern Ireland managers were briefed about business opportunities in China at a special workshop organised by Trade International, the export and trade division of the Industrial Development Board, in Belfast on Tuesday September 4.

The event was part of a drive by Trade International to encourage companies to explore export business throughout China. It also provided practical guidance to those taking part in a Trade International mission to Hong Kong and China in November.

Also included was an exhibition at which a variety of business support and services organisations offered advice on exporting to this important global marketplace.

Lawson McDonald, IDB Deputy Chief Executive, said: “China’s 1.3 billion customers offer a substantial business opportunity to Northern Ireland companies. It’s an opportunity that export focused companies cannot afford to ignore.

“The phasing out of import tariffs which follow China’s WTO membership will also facilitate trade in a market that requires and rewards commitment and patience. Planned economic reforms and restructuring of the administration will provide further business opportunities with public sector bodies for ambitious local companies.

“The Trade International Mission in November provides an ideal opportunity to local companies wishing to research the market and to build on contacts made during the showcase.”

Among other participants will be senior officers from the China, Hong Kong and Taiwan units of Trade Partners UK, the British Trade International organisation responsible for promoting UK exports.

Trade International works closely with British Trade International on initiatives to increase UK exports in the global marketplace. (MB)
