Call For Job Creation Drivers
It seems that Ireland, in times of economic uncertainty, is taking one step forward and one back in terms of employment.
Cork is to receive an 'employment boost' following an announcement that a computing company will create 250 jobs. However it is predicted that in Dublin 250 jobs will be lost at another IT firm.
VMware, In Cork, is expanding its facilities in Ireland with a further site to support the increasing demand for its services.
Jobs Minister Richard Burton has confirmed that the company, a global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, will create the jobs over the next three years.
The plans were announced at the opening of a major new VMware office in Ballincollig, Cork, where the company already employs over 550 people across two sites.
The majority of positions created will be for customer support and sales specialists- recruitment is already underway.
Mr Burton said: "Jobs are at the very top of this Government’s agenda and I am determined to do everything possible to achieve the job-creation we so badly need. Today’s announcement by VMware is great news for Cork.
"However we must do more, and I have a plan for a series of measures across a range of sectors, including cloud computing, to hit ambitious targets and get people back to work."
Elsewhere in Dublin fears that 250 jobs could be lost has came as a devastating blow.
Pocket Kings who offer IT and marketing support to one of the world's largest online poker website has announced that it needs to make cuts of up to €12m. The result – 250 job losses.
The company currently employs around 700 staff at a facility in Cherrywood in Dublin. It is understood that redundancies of some these staff could save it the money it needs.
This announcement comes after the company was forced to pull out of the US market. Their main contract was providing IT support to an American site – Full Tilt Poker.
US authorities shut down access to Full Tilt Poker's website in the United States and charged CEO Raymond Bitar with illegal gambling, money laundering and bank fraud.
The company suspended 'real money' play in the US when these charges were filed.
Online gambling is a fast growing market worth billions of euros, but is illegal in the US.

Ms Harney described the jobs cuts announced by Elan at the firm's Dublin and Athlone operations as a severe blow to the workforce.
