Harland & Wolff boss faces possible jail term

The Norwegian boss of Harland and Wolff, Brynjulv Mugaas is facing a jail threat over claims that ex-employees were black listed because they took their cases to an industrial tribunal.

A ruling by a High Court judge on Thursday means that Mr Mugaas could go to prison for contempt of court. Mr Justice Kerr granted George Moody, a former foreman welder at the shipyard, leave to apply for an order to commit his former boss to jail.

Mr Moody, who worked at the shipyard for 29 years until he was made redundant last October, claims his sacking was unjustified and took his case to the industrial tribunal, alleging unfair dismissal.

As a member of the GMB Union, Mr Moody and his Union’s solicitors argued that the company's stance amounted to a criminal contempt of court. (MB)
