Other NI News In Brief

City Migrants Praised

The value and contribution of the migrant populations to Belfast was recognised at a special ceremony in the City Hall this week. The Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Niall Ó Donnghaile, signed the Eurocities Integrating Cities Charter which underlines the commitment and leadership of Europe's cities in addressing migrant integration. By signing the Charter, cities commit through their roles as policymakers, service providers, buyers of goods and services and employers, to strengthen their efforts in ensuring equal opportunities and non-discrimination for migrants. As part of the project, a Local Action Plan was also presented to the Mayor by the Chair of the OPENCities Local Support Group, Susan Russam. The plan outlines a number of actions, which will help attract, retain and support local international talent.

Road-up Warning

Motorists are being warned of possible delays and overnight road closures as a major resurfacing scheme on Belfast's Lisburn Road begins next week on 26 September. Roads Service has carefully programmed the works operations and the traffic management arrangements in order to minimise any inconvenience to the public. Whilst every effort will be made to progress the works as quickly and efficiently as possible, motorists should be aware that some delays may be expected and that additional time should be allowed when planning any journeys. The majority of the work will be completed overnight for five consecutive nights. Between Monday 26 September and Saturday 1 October, the Lisburn Road will be closed to countrybound traffic from Bradbury Place to Tates Avenue between the hours of 11.15pm to 6am the next morning. During these night time closures a diversion route will be signed from Bradbury Place via Malone Road and Eglantine Avenue to Lisburn Road. To enable the final surface to be laid the same stretch of the Lisburn Road will be closed on Sunday 2 October 2011 from 06:00 to 20:00. During these times a diversion route will be signed from Bradbury Place via Malone Road and Eglantine Avenue to Lisburn Road.

Benefit Fraud Man Sentenced

A man was convicted at Limavady Magistrates' court yesterday for claiming benefits he was not entitled to. George McCloskey (27) of College Court, Greysteel was given a three month custodial sentence, suspended for two years and ordered to pay court costs of £28 for wrongful encashment of Jobseekers Allowance totalling £108. He is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

Disabled Helped Into Self Employment

Invest Northern Ireland in partnership with Disability Action hosted the 'Working for Me' seminar in Belfast this week to raise awareness of the support available to disabled people who want to set up a business. Starting and running a successful business can be a challenge, but with determination, confidence and the right support in place, an entrepreneur with a viable product or service can succeed. People with disabilities, however, may find they face additional challenges. The event therefore brought together a number of organisations to discuss the issues around starting a business with 50 aspiring entrepreneurs. Sharon Polson, from Invest NI's Regional Business Team, said: "Disability should not be seen as a barrier to starting your own business. Often the first step is finding out where you can access support and advice, that's what it was all about. Invest NI offers a wide range of start-up support which is available to all entrepreneurs across Northern Ireland and is easily accessible through our regional offices, advisors and website."
