Minister addresses urban regeneration workshop

Local communities must be at the heart of future plans to regenerate their neighbourhoods, the Minister for Social Development, Maurice Morrow, has said.

The Minister was speaking at the first in a series of urban regeneration workshops which are due to be held across the province.

The workshops form part of a consultation process on the Department’s draft neighbourhood renewal strategy.

Mr Morrow said he was committed to listening to the views of local communities throughout Northern Ireland on how they would like to see their areas developed.

He said: “The Department’s proposed strategy on urban regeneration sits right at the heart of its mission statement - ‘Together, tackling disadvantage, building communities’.

“It is only through involving people at grass roots level that we will be able to tell whether we are addressing the issues which are important to them.

“This is a unique opportunity for local people to have a real input into shaping the future of their own community.

The Minister encouraged everyone with an interest in the regeneration of their community to make their views known through participation in the workshops. (MB)
