Concerns grow for safety of IRA suspects held in Colombia
Calls have been made for the Irish Department of Foreign affairs to intervene with Colombian authorities to ensure that their IRA suspects’ Human Rights are protected.
The men’s relatives have asked on the Irish Government to step in to ensure that the men are protected while they are in custody and that they should be brought back to Ireland.
The call was supported by the Sinn Fein TD for Cavan and Monaghan, Caoimhghín O Caoláin, who said that he contacted the department on behalf of the men’s families.
He said: “I am deeply concerned at reports emanating from Colombia over the weekend indicating that the lives of these man could be in imminent danger.
“The Irish Government has the responsibility to ensure that the rights of Irish nationals being detained abroad are upheld and I am calling on them to intervene immediately to ensure that these men are protected from any danger.”
Mr O Caoláin claimed that the “unsubstantiated” reports on which the case was based have been “shown to be false”.
He urged the Irish Government to do “all in its power to have these men released and returned to their families as soon as possible”. (SP)
