Irish league clubs knocked out of UEFA Cup

Hopes of a Northern Ireland representative in the first round proper of the UEFA Cup were dashed on Thursday night after both Glentoran and Glenavon were knocked out of the competition.

Danish side FC Midtjylland crushed Glentoran 4-0 to claim a 5-1 aggregate success at the Oval in Belfast after the Irish Cup winners were outclassed in an extremely a one-sided affair.

To make matters worse Glentoran goalkeeper Alan Gough was controversially sent off early in the second half.

Kilmarnock meanwhile took 66 minutes to finally break the deadlock at Rugby Park after the Irish league part-timers fought a brave battle in an attempt to claw back a one-goal deficit from the first leg in Lurgan.

A goal from Ally Mitchell for Kilmarnock was all that separated the two sides. The Scottish league side went through 2-0 on aggregate. (MB)
