Members appointed to health and social services councils
The Minister for the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety, Bairbre de Brún, has appointed 14 District and Borough Councillors as members of three Health and Social Services Councils.
All councillors to the Health and Social Services Councils (HSS) have been appointed for the period up to 31 May 2005.
There are four Health and Social Services Councils, one for each Health and Social Services Board area. The Eastern HSS Council has 30 members while the remaining three Councils each have 23 members.
Health and Social Services Councils were established in 1991 to represent the public interest in the health and social services. The Councils are required by law to keep under review the operation of these services and to make recommendations for improvements or provide advice on their operation.
The Health Minister appoints all HSS Council members. Membership comprises at least 40 per cent District/Borough Council nominations, at least 30 per cent representatives of voluntary organisations with an interest in the health and personal social services, and the remainder, people regarded as having an interest in the health and social services.
HSS Council members are not paid but are entitled to claim expenses for work carried out on the Council’s behalf. (AMcE)
