Concerns Over Recalled RVH Patients
There are concerns being expressed over news that a major hospital trust is recalling patients for further tests.
The DUP Vice-chairman of the Stormont Assembly's Health Committee, Jim Wells, has commented on the decision by the Belfast Trust to review the cases of patients who have been recalled to hospital.
Mr Wells said: "This is a very worrying incident matter especially when we consider some of the allegations about difficulties in relation to the quality of performance in other specialities in the Belfast Trust earlier this year.
"Such allegations damaged the reputation of the Trust. There must be swift action to reassure the public that the mater is being appropriately addressed."
He added that it is vital that those who are affected by this recall receive notification as soon as possible.
"Whilst this recall is about 'reassurance', anyone affected should have their fears allayed as soon as possible. The Trust must act to ensure that no further stress is added to this situation," he said.
It emerged last night that some 59 patients with conditions affecting their immune systems have been offered a review appointment at the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH).
It follows a report commissioned by the Belfast Trust after concerns about the management of some RVH patients.
Those affected are patients with chronic skin conditions, extreme allergies or joint problems.
However, the trust said it was "not in a position to say patients has received wrong drugs or wrong treatment" and insisted that its move was a precautionary measure to ensure they had received appropriate treatment.
Anyone who needs to be contacted should have received a telephone call or letter by 5pm today, Wednesday, offering an appointment over the next two to three weeks.
Medical Director Dr Tony Stevens said: "We are asking the patients to come in for a review - as a precautionary measure - to reassure them and ourselves that the treatment and care they are receiving is appropriate to their needs."
The Trust is also operating an advice line for patients who feel concerned following the announcement.
The helpline will be open from 8am to 6pm daily until Friday. The number is 028 90636330.
