DUP Attacks NHS Strikers
The East Antrim MLA Alastair Ross has said that trade union Unison's one day strike action on 5 October has resulted in 2,224 outpatient appointments and 177 inpatient admissions being cancelled at various locations across Northern Ireland. Mr Ross was commenting after he received confirmation from Health Minister Edwin Poots MLA to an Assembly Question. "Many elected representatives expressed concern that Unison were taking this action without any clear set of proposals which Government could take to prevent the strike. By taking action without any clear rationale or proposals it was perhaps inevitable that it would hit the most vulnerable hardest, and would achieve very little other than upset and annoy those directly affected by it," he said, adding, the public are quite rightly unimpressed with unions who seem eager to take aggressive strike action, even without the support of the majority of their members, rather than work constructively to resolve issues."
Prepare Now For Big Freeze
The Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy has launched NI Water's winter preparations advertising campaign, 'Don't Wait Insulate'. The campaign is being rolled out using television, radio and print media and with outdoor advertising at bus shelters and on billboards. There will also be a leaflet drop to every property in Northern Ireland. "Preparation is at the very heart of the advisory campaign that NI Water has produced, a campaign which, I hope will also be supported and promoted by other public representatives. The key advice is that we should not wait but insulate now, identify where stop tap/valves are, install proper lagging and look out for neighbours who may need help," he said. "This campaign will help the public in their preparations for winter weather."
British Blues Spark Interest
Breeders of the famous British Blue expect 'fireworks' when bidding commences at their export status sale on Sat Nov 5, Guy Fawkes Day at Moira. As NI Blue Breeders Club Secretary Harold McKee of Kilkeel explained: "The interest from as far afield as Coleraine and Cork in this export status auction is amazing. Our auctioneer, Michael Taaffe, is busy sending out catalogues for over 50 lots he will sell after British Blue Cattle Society inspection. All stock entered is eligible for immediate export and warranted under National Beef Association rules," adding that 21 pedigree British Blue bulls are entered for the Premier Show and Sale along with 25 pedigree females, three recipients and two frozen embryos. Judge Steve Pattison from Cumbria will have the stock on parade from 10am with auctioneer Michael Taaffe putting his gavel into action at 1pm. Moira Arena, centrally located just mins from the Ulster M1, is reached via Junction 9 onto the airport roundabout.
Children Need Good Start
The NI Health Minister Edwin Poots has said that every child in Northern Ireland deserves to have the best start possible in life. The DUP Minister was speaking as he visited the Colin Neighbourhood Partnership (CNP) in Dunmurry. The Colin Area in West Belfast, covering Twinbrook, Poleglass and parts of Kilwee and Lagmore, is the largest deprived area in Northern Ireland. As well as high levels of unemployment, suicide among young people is a particular problem. He said the CNP plays a key role in seeking to address health inequalities and is promoting an 'Early Intervention Community', where community leaders support the development of a range of programmes and services to improve outcomes for children and families. The range of services provided are focussed on early years experiences, providing information and support to parents and encouraging strong emotional attachment between parents and children. Services also aim to ensure that new parents receive the support they need, through intensive home visiting by specially trained health visitors.
