Flag marshall killed in “freak accident” at Ulster Grand Prix
A flag marshal has been killed in an accident at the Dundrod racing circuit in County Antrim during last weekend’s Ulster Grand Prix.
Gerald Allaway, 56, from Comber, County Down was killed when he was hit by a bike after its rider came off at a chicane during the tournaments fourth race.
The accident happened during the last lap of the Regal 600 race on Saturday. The two lead riders, who were battling towards the chequered flag, went through the chicane, which had been built into the circuit to slow riders down.
However, while one competitor came off his machine and rolled to safety, his bike somersaulted over a safety barrier and struck Mr Allaway. He died on his way to hospital.
Those at the scene of the crash described the incident as a “freak accident”, given that it had happened on a part of the circuit that had new safety measures built in.
Earlier at the circuit, two competitors received broken limbs in a pile up during a race.
Only two years ago, the circuit claimed the life of rider, Owen McNally. (MB)
