Football task force to call for single body
The 'task force' set up to help revive football in Northern Ireland is set to call for the game to be ruled by one governing body.
At present power is shared between the Irish Football Association and the Irish League. However, local fans and many of those in power in both footballing bodies have voiced their preference for one organisation to oversee the whole of local football.
The soccer strategy advisory panel, set up by Northern Ireland sports minister Michael McGimpsey, has been examining ways of making the game more attractive for supporters. The panel's proposals are to be published in October.
Already support has come from two of Northern Ireland’s biggest clubs, Linfield and Glentoran. Linfield chairman, Billy McCoubrey, who is also vice president of the Irish League and would almost certainly lose his position if the new body is enforced, has called for the proposals to be implemented.
Local football is now awaiting an official comment from both the IFA and the Irish League. (MB)
