Final Day Of McAleese Presidency
Today is the last day in office for the President of the Irish Republic, north Belfast-born, Mary McAleese.
This is the 60-year-old's last day in the post before Ireland's ninth President Michael D Higgins is inaugurated as her successor.
Mary was the first Irish President to welcome a British Monarch to the Republic.
Prof McAleese has held the post for the past 14 years and is widely regarded as a 'hard act to follow'.
On 11th November, 1997, Mary McAleese was inaugurated as the eighth President of Ireland and was re-elected on Friday 1st October 2004 being the only validly-nominated candidate.
She is a barrister and former Professor of Law. Born on June 27th 1951 in Belfast, she is the first President to come from Northern Ireland.
The President-elect Michael D Higgins will visit Northern Ireland at the weekend following his inauguration.
He will travel to Londonderry on Sunday for the final of the all-island school choir of the year competition after attending the Remembrance Sunday service at St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, earlier in the day.

McAleese Honours British War Graves
Irish President Mary McAleese is visiting Gallipoli in Turkey to mark the deaths of thousands of Irish soldiers who fought in the British Army during the First World War. She attended wreath-laying ceremonies in the Gallipoli region where nearly 4,000 Irish troops died in a bloody five-month campaign in 1915.

The third day of the Queen's historic trip to Ireland has seen Her Majesty in her element as the horse lover enjoyed a trip to one of Ireland's top horse breeding centres. The Irish National Stud in Co Kildare has produced some of the most successful thoroughbreds at its centre near Dublin.

Queen Adds Her Voice As Fitzgerald Mourned
Former Taoiseach, Dr Garret FitzGerald, 85, has passed away in a Dublin hospital after a short illness. He served as Taoiseach twice between 1981 and 1987 and made key negotiations in the Anglo-Irish Agreement of 1985 helping Northern Ireland work towards a peaceful future.
