Other NI News In Brief
Wreaths Destroyed
The SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey has strongly condemned those responsible for the removing of wreaths from the Diamond War Memorial, which were later found burnt at Free Derry Corner on Wednesday. "I want to make it clear on behalf of the people of the Bogside in particular, that this action is not supported by that community. Those that felt the need to destroy items left at the Memorial on Remembrance Day are contributing nothing to the tolerant society we are seeking to build - and indeed I would go so far as to say that if those responsible spent more time reading about the World Wars that Memorial commemorates, than engaging in sectarian destruction, they would see many Irish names amongst the fallen. Anyone with any information on this incident should make contact with the PSNI," he said. Alliance Foyle representative Keith McGrellis has also expressed his disgust after a number of Remembrance Day wreaths were stolen in Derry and set on fire at Free Derry Corner in the early hours of Wednesday morning. "I am disgusted by the actions of the mindless thugs responsible for the burning of these wreaths. It shows a lack of respect to those paid the ultimate sacrifice in two world wars and other conflicts."

Crash Pensioner Dies
Alliance East Belfast MLA Judith Cochrane has offered her condolences to the family and friends of a woman who has died following a road accident on Monday night on the Albertbridge Road in East Belfast. Delores Friar was 72-years-old and came from the Templemore Street area. "I would like to offer my sympathies to the family and friends of Delores. This was a tragic loss of life," said the MLA. "Her death highlights the dangers we face on the roads and the need to improve road safety. The Department of the Environment has been doing a lot of good work on road safety but the public needs to be responsible when out on the roads."
BMA Backs Smoke-free Cars
The BMA in Northern Ireland today welcomed that Minister Poots will give consideration to a ban on smoking in cars carrying children, following this week's debate in the Assembly on the issue. Newry consultant Dr Peter Maguire, a member of the BMA's Board of Science said: "The BMA is today publishing a review of compelling scientific evidence supporting a ban on smoking in motor vehicles is published today in a new briefing paper , and we are calling on UK governments to introduce an extension to the current smoke-free legislation to include a ban on smoking in private vehicles. Research compiled by the BMA shows that there is strong evidence that smoking in vehicles exposes non-smokers to very high levels of second-hand smoke. This is because of the restrictive internal environment in motor vehicles which exposes drivers and passengers to 23 times more toxins than a smoky bar. Children and other vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly, are particularly at risk from health dangers relating to second-hand smoke," he said, adding, "The elderly are prone to respiratory problems so second-hand smoke is especially dangerous for them. Vulnerable groups, including children, do not have the same choices as adults and may be unable to refuse to take a journey in a smoky vehicle."
Poots Backs Brain Trauma Care
The NI Health Minister Edwin Poots has launched new standards to improve services for people with brain injury. The documents have been developed to help patients, families and carers to get the best from brain injury services and support in Northern Ireland. "Around 2000 people a year in Northern Ireland sustain and are living with the long-term effects of brain injury. It brings with it countless symptoms and challenges including memory loss, mobility problems, personality changes and behavioural issues. Of course we also have to remember the impact of the brain injury on family members and friends, who will also be living with the effects it has had on their loved one," the DUP Minister said.
