Police appeal for information on airport bomb

Police have appealed for anyone with information about last week’s attempted bombing of Belfast International Airport.

Dissident republican group the Real IRA are thought to be behind the bombing attempt which left hundreds of passengers stranded for hours while the 20 kg bomb left in a car was dealt with by bomb disposal experts.

Police said that the car was in a distinctive silver coloured Volvo estate and appealed for anyone who saw the vehicle being parked at the airport to come forward.

The car was parked in the long-stay car park just after 3pm on Wednesday, August 1. Police said that a man who claimed to be from the Real IRA made the first warning of the car bomb to a Belfast newsroom at around 5am on Wednesday. However, an initial search failed to find the vehicle and a further search was carried out following a warning phone call made to a Catholic priest. The second search located the silver Volvo V70 estate which had been stolen in east Belfast in late June.

Detectives at Antrim RUC station would like to hear from anyone with information on the movements of the vehicle after June 21. (SP)
