New worm poses insidious threat to Microsoft users
Warnings have been issued about the existence of a new computer worm which is thought to be less widespread but more insidious than the recent Code Red variant.
The new threat is thought to be much more adept at seeking out vulnerable computers than Code Red, which failed to infect as many machines as predicted, thanks to the slow way in which it searched out host machines. The new variant can spread much faster due to the way it can look for other computers sharing the same network as the machine within which it resides.
The worm currently only targets computers which use Microsoft 2000, and which run Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) - which may ultimately limit the range of the worm. However, when the worm infects a machine, it installs Trojan code, which could allow unpredictable use to be made of the machine at a later point.
It is also thought that such recent scares such as the one over Code Red – described as ‘more hype than havoc’ – may lead people to become complacent about the dangers such worms pose to their operating systems, with many now not bothering to download the patches freely available from websites.
