NI To Drop Out Of Carling Nations Cup
The Northern Ireland football team has announced plans that might see them drop out of the Carling Nations Cup, leaving doubts over the competition’s future.
Alarmingly low attendances at the first stages of the tournament in the summer and rows over appearance fees have also acted as stumbling blocks for the competition.
Irish Football Association boss, Jim Shaw, is now pulling his nation out of the event.
Mr Shaw said that Northern Ireland’s appearance at the Carling Nations Cup was a one off to start with- there was never any agreement for it to continue. He said that if it had on gone better perhaps the team would have continued with the cup.
This comes after a number of players chose to sit out of the initial tournament match for NI and while a number of fans also chose to boycott the event after players decided to play for the Republic of Ireland.
