Firm Fined After Teen Lost Top Of Finger
Capital Reinforcing (Ireland) Ltd was fined a total of £12,500 plus £1,000 costs after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing at Laganside Crown Court to three breaches of health and safety legislation.
The case against the company was brought by the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI).
The case arose out of an incident that occurred on 29th June 2010 at the Company premises in Belfast. The 18 year old had commenced a work placement earlier that month which involved bending lengths of reinforcing bars in a bending machine.
During this his hand came into contact with the unguarded rotating parts of the machine and became trapped. As a result of the injuries he received, the young employee had his left index finger partially amputated.
The subsequent investigation revealed that the company had not identified the hazards or provided appropriate training to the employee. The way the machine was being operated was clearly unsafe and made it likely that an accident would occur.

Industry urges NI to ‘play safe’ with cash cards
Cash machine users were today advised to keep playing safe when making cash withdrawals, despite fraudulent cash withdrawals in Northern Ireland falling by 8% to £368,000 over the past year. However, despite a fall in Northern Ireland figures the rest of the UK saw an average rise of 85% in fraudulent cash withdrawals over the same period.

A County Armagh plastics company has been fined after a 20-year-old employee lost his arm while working at on the factory floor. Clarehill Plastics Ltd. received the £8,000 fine following an investigation by inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI).

Over 800 young people from schools in Lisburn and Castlereagh attended a hard-hitting road safety message at the PSNI Road Safe Roadshow on 19 November. The roadshow, supported by AXA Insurance and the Northern Ireland Road Safety Partnership, aims to educate young drivers about the dangers of irresponsible driving.
