Mexico win Elite Milk Cup Trophy
The Mexican team has won the Elite Milk Cup Trophy after beating Scotland 4-3 in a penalty shootout at the Coleraine Showground’s on Thursday evening.
It was welcome end to an eventful trip for the Mexicans who missed their connecting flight in San Fransisco on their way to Northern Ireland for the official opening by ex-England international Peter Beardsley.
However, having arrived two days late for the tournament the lads left the province early proudly showing off their new trophy.
The penalty decider became necessary after the Mexicans defeated Northern Ireland 3-1 to finish level on points and on goal difference with the Scots.
In the nerve-jangling finale Mexico kept their cool to snatch glory with a 4-3 win.
It was a strange scenario with the Scottish penalty kick takers waiting and watching in the wings hoping that the Irish could do enough to deny the Mexicans. But it wasn’t to be and the Mexican penalty kick takers kept their cool to secure their first ever Milk Cup success. (MB)
