School Jobs Saved With Funding Boost
Schools in Northern Ireland are to receive a massive boost to funding it has been announced.
In a bid to help save hundreds of jobs across the country an extra £120m will be provided in funding for education in the next three years. This move almost wipes out the current funding shortfall.
The decision – which follows talks convened by the First and Deputy First Minister - will see an additional allocation of £30m,£15m and £75m from the 2012/13 financial year on, going straight into school budgets.
It's not yet clear where the money was found.
Education Minister, John O’Dowd, said: "Schools will welcome this news."
He continued: "Since my appointment as Education Minister I have consistently highlighted the fact that that the education budget faces unprecedented financial challenges over the next three years. I said that I would argue the case with Executive colleagues for further investment to help alleviate pressures on school budgets.
"I am extremely pleased, therefore, that my arguments have been listened to and welcome the additional allocations over the next three years."
The additional funding will help plug the big shortfall in funding the Department of Education has been forced to deal with.
It saw its budget slashed by £126m as a result of a reduction of Stormont's block grant from Westminster.

Heavy Snow Closes Over 80 Schools
Over 80 schools across Northern Ireland have been closed as the heavy snow continues to cause disruption on Tuesday morning. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, as the snow is continuing to affect many roads. Areas which have been majorly disrupted include Lisburn, Castlereagh and Carryduff.

First School To Be Completed On Strule Education Campus Unveiled
The first school to be completed on the Strule Education Campus has been unveiled in Omagh, Co Tyrone. Arvalee School and Resource Centre has been described as a "new era" for shared education in the area and officially opened in September 2016.

Further Six Projects In Shared Education Programme
A further six projects involving over 20 schools have signed up to the second call in the Shared Education Campuses Programme. The Shared Education Campuses Programme was launched in January 2014 by Minister for Education John O'Dowd. Under the Programme the Department is aiming to invest in projects involving the need for new shared facilities.
