Unemployment Declines But Benefit Claims Rise
The unemployment rate in Northern Ireland has dropped slightly but the number of people receiving benefits is continuing to soar.
According to recent findings the rate of unemployment is down 0.7% since last quarter and rests currently at 6.8% down 1% from this time last year.
But the Labour Force Survey also revealed that the number of people claiming unemployment benefit rose to 60,700 up by 100 in the last month.
This news comes at a time when NI youth unemployment in Northern Ireland has more than doubled.
Yesterday it was revealed that the rate of youth unemployment in Northern Ireland was the highest in all of the UK and has risen by 155% since 2008.
Youth unemployment is at its highest since 1997 and approximately 20% of Northern Ireland’s young people are unemployed. Economists warn unemployment amongst young people will continue to rise in the short and medium term.
The overall rate of unemployment at 6.8% is still below the UK average of 8.4%. Elsewhere in the Republic of Ireland the outlook is worse with the unemployment rate at 14.3%.
