Teachers To Get 90 Weeks Redundancy Pay
It has been revealed that teachers who accept redundancy will walk away with up to 90 weeks severance pay.
The Education Minister, John O’Dowd has said that teachers who agree to voluntary redundancy from April 2012 onward will receive a package which is three times the amount teachers are contractually entitled to.
Mr O'Dowd, said: "Education faces unprecedented challenges. The harsh reality is that the cuts imposed on this administration by the British Government have severely impacted upon schools' budgets. Although it is too early to predict the impact of the reduction in funding in terms of jobs, as over 80% of schools' expenditure is staff related there will inevitably be an impact on staff if costs are to be contained within budget.
"Having listened carefully to the concerns of the teacher unions and the Employing Authorities I am making the necessary funding available to enable Employing Authorities to offer total compensation of three times the amount of improved statutory redundancy.”
The Minister has allocated £167m to make the offer to school staff.

Fears over an apparent lack of job opportunities for newly qualified teachers have been in focus this week. It has been claimed that as many as 95% of new teachers are unable to secure full time jobs. That's according to a DUP MLA who underlined the claim when MLAs debated the concerns over the number of new teachers at Stormont.
