Police Investigate Another Hijack Attempt
Four men have attempted to hijack a woman’s car in south Belfast at the weekend adding to the recent spate of hijackings in the area.
The woman was forced to stop by the men standing in front of her car. It happened shortly after midnight on Agincourt Avenue.
She locked her doors, and despite the men's attempts to open them she was able to drive off.
This news follows a series of other hijacking incidents and brings the total to 13 incidents mostly targeting women driving alone in the last fortnight.
The PSNI has created a special task force to deal with the rise in hijackings in the Belfast area and they claim that the incidents are not related.
Last week Deputy Chief Constable Judith Gillespie spoke out regarding the upsurge of incidents in Belfast.
She said: "I do not underestimate the impact of these incidents on those people involved, but it is important to highlight that despite these recently reported carjackings, the likelihood of becoming a victim of this type of crime is slim.
"We have increased our resources in the city centre and have implemented a comprehensive pro-active police operation to prevent these crimes taking place, investigate, detect and arrest those responsible and put them before the courts."
