Car Repair Complaints Increase
Complaints about botched car repairs are on the rise in Northern Ireland, according to Trading Standards.
The regulatory body said that complaints about cars have increased over a thousand in a year and also claim that a third of these complaints refer to servicing work or repairs.
While the number of complaints is a fraction of the overall repair jobs carried out, mechanics have to work on increasingly complex cars and rely on electronic diagnostic equipment.
Trading Standards' Damien Doherty told the BBC: "There is an expectation and onus on them to do the job properly, to identify faults, not to misdiagnose and certainly not to charge for work they haven't done."
Trading Standards said that there is an onus on garages to carry out servicing and repairs with a reasonable degree of care and skill.

Work Underway For Free Hospital Parking In Northern Ireland
Work has begun at several hospital sites across Northern Ireland as part of the preparations for the introduction of free car parking in May 2026. Health and Social Care Trusts have been actively preparing for the implementation of a new traffic management system since the Hospital Parking Charges Act was passed in 2022.

The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Dr John Reid, has unveiled The Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland’s first annual report before Parliament on Monday July 23. The report covers the Police Ombudsman office’s discharge of its functions during the first 17 months since it was established in November 2000.

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment’s Trading Standards Service (TSS) has warned the general public to be wary of counterfeit goods on sale at car boot sales. The TSS made the warning as it advised organisers that it will be visiting car boot sales over the coming months to ensure such goods are not on sale.
