SUSPENSION ROW MAY SEE TRANSPORT UNION FRAGMENT
Trade union representatives are to release a statement on Monday detailing why ATGWU leader Mick O’Reilly and Belfast Secretary Eugene McGloin have been placed under suspension by the TGWU.
A decision to put the two men on ‘precautionary suspension’ was made three weeks ago by parent union, London’s TGWU. So far they have not been issued with a reason for this action, but it is expected that Monday’s statement will see further clarification of the issue.
Following a meeting of ATGWU members in Dublin on July 19, it has been reported that the charges have been reported to the district secretaries. The move followed a review of administrative and procedural practices at the ATGWU.
Meanwhile a schism has occurred in the Irish branch of the union, with speculation growing that the ATGWU may split from its parent group. (CD)
