GOVERNMENT GIVES GREEN LIGHT FOR HALIFAX MERGER

THE PROPOSED £29 million merger between the Halifax and the Bank of Scotland has been given the green light by the Government.

Following consultation with the Director General of Fair Trading, a spokeperson from the Department of Trade and Industry announced that the merger would not be referred to the Competition Commission for assessment on the grounds that the resulting market shares resulting from the deal would “not warrant” investigation from the Commission.

Halifax welcomed the decision, describing their move as part of a plan to make life “difficult” for the ‘big four’ of banking, which includes HSBC, Barclays and RBS/NatWest. The merger is expected to be completed by September 10, with the new group taking the title of HBOS.

The news follows last week’s announcement by the Government that it would not be allowing Lloyd TSB’s takeover bid for Abbey National, on the grounds that the £18b move would not be in the public’s interest. (CL)
