FOUR OUT OF FIVE PEOPLE DEEM RUC ACCEPTABLE

NEW RESEARCH published by the Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman's office has shown that four out of five people have not experienced any unacceptable behaviour from RUC officers.

The findings also revealed that individuals below the age of 25, and those who belong to the Catholic community, are more likely to have felt that they have experienced police behaviour which they deem unacceptable.

This latest survey by the Police Ombudsman's Office showed heightened awareness of the organisation’s existence and function, with around 65 per cent of the population now aware of the Ombudsman's Office, a seven per cent increase on the last survey. The findings also detailed that around 35 per cent of people aged under 25 were now aware of the office, while more than 80 per cent of people knew it was independent from the police.

The RUC have been supplied with the latest findings and it is expected that the Police Ombudsman's Office and RUC would be working together in providing a better policing service. (MB)
