FISHKILL SIGHTED ON SIXMILEWATER AT BALLYNURE
DESPITE an emergency clean-up operation by the Water Service the Sixmilewater has been contaminated by an as yet unidentified pollutant.
On 16 July 2001, DOE Environment & Heritage Service (EHS) was notified that the pollutant had entered the waste water treatment works at Ballynure, Co. Antrim, with reports being issued on the same day of a fish kill in the Sixmilewater, renowned as a high quality-angling river.
While an emergency operation had commenced to prevent the pollutant from reaching the river, Investigation by staff from the Fisheries Conservancy Board (FCB) found that, in spite of the determined efforts of the Water Service to contain the pollutant within the works, a proportion had managed to infiltrate the Sixmilewater.
It is believed that the pollutant is an industrial detergent. Statutory samples have been collected from the river and further samples have been taken from within the sewerage system in Ballynure.
A definite line of enquiry is being followed and collection of evidence is continuing with a view to prosecution. (CL)

Roads Service Ready For Winter Weather
Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd has confirmed that the Department's winter service team is prepared to tackle the current cold snap. Around 300 staff and 130 gritters are ready to salt main roads, while 12 snow blowers are available for deployment if necessary. Major Fish Kill In Armagh
Over 1,000 fish have been killed by pollution in a river in Co Armagh. The Northern Ireland Environment Agency were alerted to the River Callan on Tuesday, 12 June. An investigator attended the scene and a small number of fish were confirmed dead and the river was running with black discolouration.

Man Dies After Bus Fall In Belfast
Detectives are investigating the death of an 80-year-old man who fell from a bus in Belfast. Police have said that they believe the man was travelling on a 2J Translink Metro bus service at around 11:15am on Friday, 08 November, when he suffered a fall as the bus travelled along Royal Avenue, near it's junction with North Street.
