BELFAST BAR FINED IN VODKA SUBSTITUTION CASE
THE Garrick Bar in Chichester Street, Belfast, has been fined £3,000 plus costs, following charges brought by the Trading Standards Service, under the Trade Marks Act 1994.
The charges were in relation to the substitution of Smirnoff vodka with another brand of vodka.
The Garrick Bar is a partnership between licensee Bernard O'Neill and two other members of his family. Four charges under the Trade Marks Act 1994 were laid against each partner. The partnership pleaded guilty and were fined £250 on each charge.
In presenting the facts of the case to the court, the representative for the DPP informed Mr Hamill that the activity of substituting a well-known brand of spirit, such as Smirnoff vodka, with another brand was not limited to this particular case.
The court case was the result of an enforcement exercise undertaken by officers of the Trading Standards Service, who visited approximately 15 public bars in the greater Belfast area in May 2000.
A spokesman for the Trading Standards Service said that this was not an isolated case and that further prosecutions arising from the exercise were currently pending. He warned that the Trading Standards Service would continue to carry out checks to ensure that consumers were not being misled. (MB)

Gig-goers and sports fans have been warned not to be conned by the increasing number of sophisticated fake ticketing sites that are appearing online. The Trading Standards Service (TSS) is warning that, in the last six months, it has received approximately 50 complaints from consumers after buying tickets from rogue websites.
