Discussions On Plan To Tackle Youth Unemployment Begins
Labour TD Dominic Hannigan welcomes the meetings today between the European Commission and Irish officials to tackle youth unemployment.
Speaking today Mr Hannigan said: "Meetings begin today between the European Commission's Action Team on youth unemployment and Irish officials to come up with a plan to help unemployed young people get back to work. 3 out of 10 Irish young people are not in work right now. These young people have been through our education system and yet they do not have the opportunities to get into training or work when they leave school. We are letting their skills go unused which is bad for them and bad for our economy.
"The Action team along with our officials and social partners are going to investigate how unspent EU structural funds can be spent on ways to get young people into new training programmes that are targeted at gaps that exists in our jobs market. They are going to discuss how we can get young people involved working with SMEs. Getting them the experience in these businesses will help them to develop their own skills and give them the confidence to start their own business."
