POLICE LAUNCH APPEAL OVER COMA VICTIM
IT is thought that a man who was found in a coma in a north Belfast flat on Saturday evening was beaten up and left for dead several days prior to his discovery.
The man, named locally as Mark McAfee, is currently in the Royal Victoria Hospital on a life support machine in a critical but stable condition.
The alert was sounded by a neighbour who hadn’t seen Mr McAfee in two days. Police then entered the flat in Carlisle Parade in North Belfast and found the 58-year-old lying unconscious on the ground.
Police have appealed for any witnesses to come forward to help them with their enquiries, and an investigation into the circumstances of the incident is currently being carried out. However, until the man wakes up, they may remain unable to establish what exactly happened, as the police and hospital authorities are both unable to explain how Mr McAfee came by his injuries
Forensic teams were working inside the flat most of Sunday and police have been keeping people away from the scene.
Local parish priest Father David White, who visited the injured man in hospital, has said that he is convinced that Mr McAfee was beaten up and left for dead. (AMcE)
