HOUSE OF COMMONS CONSIDERS ELECTIONS FOR NI
LEGISLATION to allow elections to the Northern Ireland Assembly has been introduced in the House of Commons on Monday 16 July.
Legal procedures for Northern Ireland’s devolved government have to be installed in light of the possibility that the political parties might fail to reach agreement by August 11.
The current political impasse was cemented with First Minister David Trimble’s resignation on July 1. He resigned from his executive post stating that he couldn’t continue sitting in government with republicans while the IRA failed to decommission their weapons.
Following six days of talks at Weston Park in Staffordshire, which concluded without a breakthrough on Saturday July 14, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern have retreated in order to draw up a “non-negotiable” package to put to all the pro-Agreement parties.
The parties will have a few weeks to respond and if the package is rejected then Mr Blair will have to decide whether to suspend the Northern Ireland Assembly or call fresh elections. The legislation introduced on Monday in the House of Commons will enable this. (AMcE)
