MAN KILLED IN SPRUCEFIELD ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENT

ONE man has died and two people have been seriously hurt in a head-on collision involving two cars on the M1 in County Antrim.

It is understood the crash, which took place on Sunday July 15 at around 5.30pm, was caused by a grey Daihatsu Charade travelling the wrong way along the country-bound carriageway near Sprucefield, outside Lisburn. The accident occurred when the driver of the Daihatsu drove on the wrong side of the carriageway and collided with a red Vauxhall Corsa between the Saintfield junction and Sprucefield.

The driver of the Daihatsu died at the scene while emergency services freed a man and woman from the Vauxhall, who were then taken to hospital. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Traffic branch officers saw the vehicle driving on the wrong side but were unable to cross over the motorway and reach the driver before the fatal accident occurred.

The carriageway was closed between the Saintfield interchange and Sprucefield for four hours after the fatal smash. (AMcE)
