Call For Traffic Calming After Child Is Knocked Down
SDLP Strabane Cllr Patsy Kelly has called for traffic calming measures to be introduced on the Melmount Road in Strabane after a school child was struck by a car on the route yesterday.
Cllr Kelly said: "This must have been a terrifying experience for the child concerned and my thoughts are with them, their peers who witnessed the accident and the driver of the vehicle, all of whom must be very distressed at this time.
"I have called on Roads Service to urgently carry out a traffic assessment of the Melmount Road to reduce the risk of an incident like this ever happening again.
"On this route we have a high volume of traffic with three schools and over 2000 children travelling on this road on weekdays. There are also two nursing homes and therefore elderly people frequently walking on the road.
"While Roads Service has said they intend to introduce flashing lights to alert drivers to reduce their speed, this is insufficient and traffic calming measures such as ramps are required to actively slow vehicles down.
"The SDLP will continue to make representations to Roads Service until this road is made safer for school children, the elderly, drivers and all who use the busy route."
