Director General Of NI Prison Service Resigns
The Director General of the Northern Ireland Prison service is set to leave after only one year in the position.
Colin McConnell has headed up the NI Prison service for just over a year and has resigned so that he can take over as the Chief Executive of the Scottish Prison Service at the end of May.
Mr McConnell’s departure was officially announced today.
During his time with the Northern Ireland Prison Service McConnell, who is originally from Scotland, recruited 200 new personnel and lead a radical reform of the prison service.
The Justice Minister David Ford said that Mr McConnell had made a significant contribution to the prison reform programme and wished him well in his new post.

The Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS) has welcomed the publication of a report on its treatment of vulnerable prisoners. Published by Criminal Justice Inspection Northern Ireland (CJINI), it found that while a number of improvements have been made in the care and treatment of vulnerable prisoners, more needs to be done.

Lock-up Was Factor In Prisoner's Death
The practice of locking up prisoners for almost all of the day has been identified as a major factor in a recent spate of custody suicides. The issue has come to light after a teenage prisoner - who was locked in his cell for around 22 hours a day because of short-staffing - committed suicide.

Prison Services Launch Recruitment Drive
The Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS) has today launched a recruitment campaign for new Custody Officers. It expects to recruit up to 200 officers to this new grade within the Prison Service. NIPS Director General Colin McConnell has described the launching of the recruitment campaign as a key milestone in building a new Prison Service.
