PARADES COMMISSION CONSIDER APPEALS OVER DERRY ORANGE PARADE
THE City of Londonderry Orange Lodge has appealed against the Parades Commission decision to ban most of its parade from the West Bank on the12th of July, and has asked for a review of the decision.
The Northern Ireland Parades Commission ruled on Friday 6 July that only one lodge from the Fountain, and a local band, would be allowed to parade in the Cityside area, but not near the Diamond. In addition, other lodges would be prevented from crossing Craigavon Bridge to parade around the city's war memorial.
In response to these restrictions the Orange Order in Londonderry lodged submissions with the Parades Commission. The Commission will not say whether they intend to review their decision until later this week. Their initial ruling was made after the Orange Order refused to take part in talks with the Bogside Residents Group, who are in opposition to the parade.
Permission was granted to only the Britannia Orange Lodge and one band for a parade from the Fountain to the Craigavon Bridge via Wapping Lane before rejoining the main parade across the bridge.
The Britannia Lodge will also be the only lodge permitted to return to the Fountain through the Cityside area on the return march. The rest of the parade will be restricted to the Waterside.
The nationalist Bogside Residents Group objected to the Orange Order's application to the proposed parade route through the area of the Diamond. They lodged their objections with the Parades Commission last month on the grounds that the Orange Order would not enter into talks with them regarding the choice of route. (AMcE)
