LOYALIST SUPPORT FOR PEACE PROCESS BEGINS TO WANE
LOYALIST support for the peace talks was showing signs of weakening during the second day of discussions between the British and Irish governments and local political parties.
The Progressive Unionist Party (PUP), which is linked to the loyalist paramilitary group, the Ulster Volunteer Force, has withdrawn from the current phase of the process.
Mr Ervine said that the PUP could not be a party to the talks if it did not know what was being agreed behind closed doors between the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), Sinn Fein and the SDLP. The decision was made on Tuesday after a meeting of the PUP executive.
On the same day the Ulster Freedom Fighters withdrew their support for the Good Friday Agreement but have stated they are still maintaining their ceasefire. Part of the groups statement read: “We find it intolerable that Sinn Fein have gained concession after concession yet there is still a growing erosion of our culture and our heritage”.
Sinn Fein, meanwhile, has had held a 90-minute meeting with the UUP at Weston Park as part of the negotiations. The talks are expected to continue throughout Tuesday. (MB)

£17m To Support Pensioners Affected By Winter Fuel Payment Changes
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has announced a £17 million fund to support pensioners who have lost eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment due to recent UK government changes. The one-off £100 payment will be automatically issued to an estimated 250,000 pensioners in around 170,000 households before the end of March 2025.
