BOMBARDIER ORDER SECURES EXTRA WORK FOR SHORTS
BOMBARDIER Aerospace, the parent company of Belfast aerospace firm Shorts, has won an order for aircraft worth more than £1bn.
The Canadian firm have secured the sale of 75 CRJ440 aircraft, providing extra work for the Belfast plant, where the aircraft’s fuselages will be manufactured.
The contract is with US airline Northwest and is for a 44-seat version of the aircraft. Delivery will be completed over the next four years.
However, with Shorts having already increased its workforce by 1,500 over the last year, the order is unlikely to mean significant extra jobs being created in Belfast.
The Bombardier CRJ440 is a 44-passenger variant of the best-selling 50-seat Bombardier CRJ200 Series regional jet. The US airline has also taken options and purchase rights on an additional 175 aircraft.
The agreement also provides Northwest with the flexibility to substitute 50-seat CRJ aircraft for the 44-seat variant.
In February 1999, Northwest Airlines placed firm orders for 54 Bombardier CRJ200 Series aircraft. To date, 20 aircraft have been delivered with the remaining 34 aircraft to be delivered over the next three years. (MB)
