GOLF AND GAELIC SUCCESS FOR ULSTER AT WEEKEND
ULSTER enjoyed a whirlwind of sporting success in the field of golf and Gaelic football over the weekend.
Dungannon golfer Darren Clarke won the Smurfit European open in front of 28,000 Irish fans at the K-Club on Sunday, while Tyrone won the Ulster Football Championship for the first time in six years by beating Cavan at Clones.
Ulsterman Clarke scooped the £330,000 first prize winning with a 15 under par total of 273. Irishman Padraig Harrington had to settle for his fifth runners-up finish of the season.
Clarke gave a wonderful performance by closing with a six-under-par 66, set up by a hat trick of birdies from the fourth hole. He included a total of six birdies in his closing round with just one upset at the seventh hole, where he hit the water, resulting in a bogey five.
His result closed the 19-year-old gap since the last Irishman, John O’Leary, won the Irish Open at Portmarnock in 1982.
Meanwhile in Clones, Tyrone sealed their fate into the next round of the Sam Maguire Cup by beating Cavan 1-13 to 1-11 and picked up the prestigious Ulster Senior Football Champion ship title. Their victory was hard fought and was far from a landslide victory as some pundits predicted.
Tyrone began well but Cavan ate into their full back line and ended the first half in the lead. The second half started aggressively and Tyrone asserted their superiority by clinching the game in the last 10 minutes with some spectacular forward moves from Eoin Gormley and Stephen O’ Neill.
Meanwhile, Tyrone’s minors picked up the Ulster Minor Football Championship title in the pre-Senior match at Clones on the same day. The Red and kids smashed their way to victory beating rivals Monaghan 2-13 to 0-13. (AMcE)
