EMPLOYMENT INITIATIVE TARGETS DISADVANTAGED GROUPS
DISADVANTAGED groups in Northern Ireland are to be given a helping hand to find employment thanks to the new EQUAL Community Initiatives Programme.
Issuing a call for applications to the new European-funded initiative, Sean Farren, Minister for Higher and Further Education, Training and Employment, described the Programme as providing “an opportunity to test innovative ways” of assisting those which have been disadvantaged in the labour market.
He added: “It will also explore ways of tackling problems common to different types of discrimination and inequality, rather than specifically focusing on the needs of one group.”
He continued: “Project activity will be undertaken by Development Partnerships under two themes which are Employability and Equal Opportunities in the labour market. I have a particular interest in the learning to be gained from EQUAL projects, as it will also help inform the work of my new Taskforce on Employability and Long Term Unemployment established under the Programme for Government.
“My Department has worked quickly to ensure that the implementation of EQUAL in Northern Ireland moves within the same timeframe as equivalent programmes in other European member states.”

Disadvantaged labour market groups get £5m funding
Over £5 million has been allocated to projects which address the needs of groups who are disadvantaged in the Northern Ireland labour market. Employment and Learning Minister Barry Gardiner today welcomed the results of the selection process to approve projects for the second round of the Northern Ireland Equal Community Initiative programme.
