Man Dies Unnoticed At Belfast A&E

Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital has come under fire after an elderly patient died unnoticed on a trolley at its A&E.

According to The Irish News the man was only discovered by ambulance staff who were to transfer him to another unit. It is not clear how long the man was dead before he was found.

The elderly man had been brought to the hospital's emergency department by his family but there were no beds available so he was placed on a hospital trolley within the department.

It is understood that the man was not in a critical condition so a patient care crew was booked instead of paramedics who can deal with an emergency. But when the ambulance crew arrived they found that the man died.

Procedures at the hospital state that patients admitted to A&E should be checked on by staff every 30 minutes, at which point they should take their blood pressure and take the patients pulse.

Speaking about the incident a Health Official has said that the hospital was under such pressure that it had been "pushed to its limits".

A full investigation has now been launched.
