Prisoner Sentenced After Escape Bid

A 26-year-old man who was found guilty of the manslaughter of a policeman in County Donegal has been jailed for a further four months for offences following his escape from prison last week.

Martin McDermott, admitted three charges of assaulting police officers, one charge of resisting arrest and causing criminal damage to a set of handcuffs.

Mr McDermott, from Raphoe in County Donegal, was sentenced last July for seven years for the manslaughter of Garda Gary McLoughlin in 2009.

He was reported missing from the 'open' low-security prison,Loughan House in County Cavan, following a head count on March 15.

It is understood that Mr McDermott, who has 91 previous convictions, may have simply walked out of the jail.

Mr McDermott, who has served eight months of this seven year sentence, was arrested by the PSNI after he was spotted in Londonderry.

Pedestrian Injured In Belfast Hit-and-Run
The PSNI have issued an appeal for information following a hit-and-run incident in the Botanic Avenue area of Belfast in the early hours of Thursday morning. Officers were called to the scene shortly before 1.30am after a male pedestrian was struck by a maroon Mazda. Despite being injured, the pedestrian left the area before police arrived.

Police responded to a number of offences, including resisting and obstructing police, and assault on police. Three men, aged 18, 20, and 21, have been charged and are due to appear in court in December.

Escaped Prisoner Arrested In Derry
A man who escaped from a prison in the Republic of Ireland has been arrested in Londonderry. Martin McDermott, 26, from Raphoe in County Donegal, was sentenced last July for seven years for the manslaughter of Garda Gary McLoughlin in 2009.

Man Charged With Manslaughter Of Kyle McDermott
A 24-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter following the death of Kyle McDermott. The man charged is expected to appear before Dungannon Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 09 October. The PSNI have also appealed for witnesses are are asking to speak to witnesses of a blue-coloured car which was parked on the Victoria Road on Sunday evening.
