TOURISM SHOWS SIGNS OF RECOVERY AFTER FMD
MINISTER for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Sir Reg Empey has said that the tourist industry is showing signs of recovery following the recent foot-and-mouth epidemic.
Sir Reg was replying to ministerial questions on Monday on the impact of extra funding that had been allocated to promote tourism in the province.
The Minister said that more than half of the £1 million set aside to promote tourism had been allocated. This followed his remarks that there had been an adverse affect to tourism, however there were signs that a recovery was beginning to take place.
Sir Reg revealed that of the £1 million set aside £762,000 would be going on international marketing with the further £238,000 on domestic marketing.
South Down SDLP member, Eamon O’Neill called on the Minister to support Agriculture Minister Brid Rodgers in her request for compensation for those affected by FMD.
However, the Minister replied by stating said that the tourist industry recovery funding was an entirely separate scheme to that of compensation needed for hard-hit businesses.

An innovative campaign, the 'Unite Against Hate' sporting weekend has been launched. Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson and his Junior Minister Gerry Kelly (pictured) joined forces to support the campaign which highlights all forms of hate crime and challenges people here to unite to stop it.
