BELFAST MAKES TOP TEN BRITISH CITIES
BELFAST has been voted as one of the top ten British cities at the prestigious Observer Travel Awards for 2001.
Based on the votes of more than 16,000 tourists, Belfast came eighth in a poll of favourite British destinations, a jump of six places from last year’s position of 14th.
This year’s awards saw Edinburgh top the poll for the third year running, followed closely by Glasgow.
Gerry Lennon, Chief executive of the Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau, sees the award as confirmation that the city is building a strong reputation as a top tourist destination: “This is really good news and sends a message throughout Britain that Belfast is a place that’s well worth visiting.
“These awards are based on actual visitors and their impressions of the city so we’re obviously doing something right.
“The Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau’s new Welcome Centre will improve the already high standards of hospitality that we have here in Belfast which bodes very well for the future.”
This latest accolade comes shortly after Belfast was voted one of the top-ten UK shopping cities in a survey carried out by retail consultancy Verdict.
