TRIMBLE RE-ELECTED AS UUP LEADER
ULSTER Unionist leader David Trimble has been re-elected as leader of the Ulster Unionist Party.
Mr Trimble’s re-election was confirmed at his party’s annual general meeting on Saturday at the Ulster Hall in Belfast.
Speculation about a leadership challenge had intensified following losses for his party to the DUP in the general and local government elections, however any challenges failed to materialise on the day.
It is believed that hardliners decided to back Mr Trimble because of his commitment to resign as first minister of the assembly by 1 July if the IRA does not start decommissioning.
In his speech to delegates, Mr Trimble said both his threat to resign and his ban on Sinn Fein ministers attending cross-border meetings were putting pressure on republicans, which would lead to arms decommissioning. Later in the day the DUP said that they too would resign if the UUP decided to do so.
Mt Trimble also said he expected the SDLP to exclude Sinn Fein from government if there the IRA did not start decommissioning in the coming weeks. (MB)

UUP leader's wife to stand in Lagan Valley

Daphne Trimble said she wanted to contest the seat, which is currently held by former UUP stalwart Jeffrey Donaldson, because it was a traditional "Ulster Unionist seat and the people have always been represented by Ulster Unionists".

Lord Trimble 'Graduates'
The former Ulster Unionist Leader and original First Minister of Northern Ireland, David Trimble is being honoured by a Scottish university today. David Trimble - now Lord Trimble of Lisnagarvey - will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen.
