Titanic Centenary Events Remember Lives Lost
A series of events were held over the weekend to commemorate the 1,500 men, women and children who lost their lives when the Titanic sank on 15 April 1912.
To mark the centenary of the sinking a service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving for the Titanic was held in St Anne’s Cathedral and a Requiem Mass was held in St Peter’s Cathedral, Belfast.
In addition, Belfast City Council hosted a commemorative service on 15 April which also marked the opening of the new Titanic Memorial Garden.
Tourism Minister, Arlene Foster said: "The centenary of Titanic’s fateful voyage and its unique history continues to make the Titanic legend compelling for millions of people across the world. However, as we rightfully celebrate the incredible feat of engineering and human endeavour which lies behind the building of the ship, at the heart of this story is the major loss of life which makes this story so tragic.
"The enormity of the tragedy has had a lasting impact on the relatives who lost loved ones and all of those involved in building the remarkable ship. As we mark the 100 year anniversary of the sinking of Titanic, a number of commemorative events will take place over the next few days to remember all of those who tragically died.
"These events, along with the new Titanic Memorial Garden at Belfast City Hall, allow us all to pay our respects to those who lost their lives."
